TRC20 vs ERC20: what is the difference for USDT
USDT TRC20 runs on TRON, USDT ERC20 on Ethereum. How they differ in addresses and network fees, and why the sending and receiving networks must match.
USDT exists on several blockchains at once. TRC20 is the token standard of the TRON network, ERC20 is the token standard of Ethereum. The coin is called the same, but these are two different assets on two different networks: a transfer in one network does not appear in the other.
| Network | TRON | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Address starts with | T (34 characters) | 0x (42 characters) |
| Network fee paid in | TRX (energy and bandwidth) | ETH |
| Memo/tag | Not used | Not used |
Addresses
- TRON addresses start with T and are 34 characters long.
- Ethereum addresses start with 0x and are 42 characters long. The same 0x format is used by BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum, Polygon, Base and other compatible networks — so the address alone does not tell you the network.
Network fees
Every transfer pays a fee to the network. For USDT TRC20 your wallet pays it in TRX (TRON uses energy and bandwidth, which can be obtained with TRX). For USDT ERC20 the fee is paid in ETH and depends on how busy Ethereum is. Without the native coin of the network in your wallet, you cannot send the token.
The network fee for your own transfer is charged by your wallet or exchange and is not included in the exchange estimate.
Which one to choose
- Use the network your receiving wallet or exchange supports for deposits. Check its deposit page — it lists the accepted networks.
- If you send from an exchange account, check which withdrawal networks it offers and what it charges for each.
- If the sender and the receiver use different networks, you can move USDT between them with a cross-network exchange, for example USDT TRC20 → USDT ERC20.
Send USDT only on the network shown in your exchange. Funds sent via the wrong network may be impossible to recover.

Terms in this guide
Token standard (TRC20, ERC20, BEP20)
The rules a token follows on a particular network: TRC20 on TRON, ERC20 on Ethereum, BEP20 on BNB Smart Chain, SPL on Solana, jettons on TON. USDT TRC20 and USDT ERC20 have the same name but are different assets.
Network fee
A fee paid to the network for processing a transfer, in the native coin of the network: TRX, ETH, BNB, SOL, TON and others. The network fee for your own transfer is charged by your wallet or exchange and is not included in the estimate.
Energy and bandwidth (TRON)
TRON network resources that pay for transactions. A USDT TRC20 transfer uses energy and bandwidth; if the account does not have enough, the network burns TRX to cover the difference.
